2018-03-29

In the 21st century, China’s basic education curriculum reform not only affected 250 million primary and middle school students in China, but also laid a strong human resource base for the new era, and it also created a lot of valuable experience, which means a lot on the global stage. However, it is a great challenge for us to share the experience of “Chinese Curriculum Reform”, and tell the relevant stories to others. Based on such considerations, ICI upholds the belief of “China’s experience, share with the world”, and decided to invite experts with significant influence in the international arena to share the story of “China Curriculum Reform”. Thus, ICI invited Prof. Lee Shulman from Stanford university, who is also the former chairman of AERA and an internationally renowned scholar, to hold the post of editor-in-chief with Prof. Cui Yunhuo of the Springer book series named “Curriculum Reform and School Innovation in China”. This book series will be co-published with the world renowned Springer Group, the first book School-based Curriculum in China was edited by Cui Yunhuo, Lei Hao and Zhou Wenye, the book will soon be completed and printed.

Recently, Prof. Cui Yunhuo and Prof. Chen Shuangye made a special trip to Hong Kong to meet Prof. Lee Shulman, and conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions on the next steps in the development of the series.

First, both editors emphasize that this series of books must promote the understanding of Chinese curriculum reform and school innovation from the international perspective. “internationalization” refers to a group of authors who have different backgrounds and research traditions. They must also be able to closely follow international issues, and be able to attract international readers with appropriate expressions.

Second, Prof. Shulman has high expectations for this series of books. He hopes that the views of the international community and academia on Chinese education could be changed through this series of books. He also hopes that the international community could break some simple superficial judgements, use new knowledge and new ideas to perfect people’s understanding of Chinese school curriculum system and its future development potential.

Third, one of the books has been signed and it will be published in the autumn of 2018. The cover of the entire book series has been well-designed. Prof. Cui Yunhuo introduced the topics and features of other intentional manuscripts. Prof. Schulman specifically recommended alternative topics related to the topics of the series, such as teacher education, teacher research, Chinese curriculum reform and school innovation, China's examination system and the impact of learning evaluation. The two chief editors made in-depth exchanges on how to choose topics and how to present them.
