Centennial of Curriculum Studies: Commencement and Imagination:Experts from All Around the World Gathered to Attend the 16th Shanghai International Curriculum Forum

On November 2-3, ICI held the 16th Shanghai International Curriculum Forum at East China Normal University. With the theme of “Centennial of Curriculum Studies: Commencement and Imagination”, this forum invited well-known experts from the United States, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other countries who develop their research in the fields of textbook research, educational sociology, curriculum and instruction research. More than 300 experts and scholars from more than 10 provinces and cities nationwide, leaders of education administration departments, first-line education workers also gathered to attend the forum.

★ Opening Ceremony ★

At the opening ceremony, Professor Cui Yunhuo, the director of ICI delivered a speech on behalf of the organizers of the forum. He expressed his sincere welcome to all the guests and proposed to take the opportunity of the forum to pay tribute to the sages and pay tribute to 100-year curriculum research. Professor Eckhardt Fuchs, Director of the German Institute of Teaching Materials, and Cheng Jieming, Chief Professor of the School of Education of the University of Hong Kong, delivered speeches on behalf of invited experts, they expressed their desire to cooperate with East China Normal University and ICI, and looked forward to studying and telling “Shanghai stories” about curriculum reform and educational development.

★ Keynote Reports ★

The forum invited 17 experts to give keynote speeches. Dr. Wang Zhe, Dr. Xiao Sihan, Dr. Zhang Wei, Dr. Wang Tao and Dr. Lei Hao hosted their reports respectively.

★ Theme 1: The History and Future of Curriculum Research ★

In the theme report of the conference, Professor Eckhardt Fuchs shared the research field of textbooks, the relationship between textbooks and society, and the research of textbooks in the context of globalization, with the title of “Review of Textbook Research: Close Relationship between Research, Society and Policy”. topic. He reviewed the research history of textbooks in Germany for the past ten years. In response to the shortcomings, he proposed that the revision of textbooks should use digital technology to consider the actual needs of the society and the global experience and methods.

Professor Geneva Gay, a professor of the University of Washington, made a report entitled "Contemporary Challenges of Eternal Curriculum Problems: What Knowledge Is Most Valuable?" She traced the question "what is the most valuable knowledge" that Spencer put forward in 1884, analyzed the needs of the times hidden behind this issue, and reinterpreted the four types of knowledge proposed by Spencer. She believed that this classic question does not have a universal and only correct answer. It appeals to everyone to think about the issues according to the current needs of society and human development, and to express their views bravely.

Professor Olusola O. Adesope of Boeing STEM education at Washington State University in the United States, made a report entitled "Using Evidence-Based Practice to Enhance Teaching and Learning", he pointed that evidence-based practice is a different approach, thus has a high degree of validity and reliability. He discussed how the field of education uses evidence-based practices to promote teaching and learning. And based on his own research plans, he clarified the use of evidence-based practices in multimedia learning and concept maps.

Cheng Jieming, the chief professor and the former vice president of the University of Hong Kong, stressed in his report entitled "Welcome the Curriculum of the Future: Directions and Contradictions" that education must keep pace with the times and that curriculum must be adapted to the diverse and promising prospects. He outlined the seven contradictions that can be foreseen in the course of future curriculum development. He pointed out that returning to the truth is the requirement for education from our society. People-oriented, returning to learning itself is the basic direction of curriculum development; Solving the contradiction between curriculum and future society is the basic task of curriculum reform.

Professor Guo Hua from Beijing Normal University gave a lecture on the theme of “Future Imagination of Curriculum Research”. She called on researchers to stand on the a-hundred-year curriculum research, to look back at the past, focus on the present, and look forward to the future. Meanwhile, she pointed out that the curriculum is a barometer reflecting social changes, she emphasized the importance of future curriculum research, and put forward some prospects for future curriculum research.

★ Theme 2: Experiences and Challenges of Curriculum Reform ★

Professor Cai Qingtian, the former dean of the School of Education of Chung Ching University in Taiwan. He reported on the theme of "Study and Imagination of Taiwan Students' Core Literacy Curriculum Research", he analyzed the results of the key competency study of Taiwanese students from 2005 to 2013, and the K-12 primary and secondary school curriculum categorization key competency and coherent system research in various fields. He believed that the development process from “key competency from the education stage” to “the key competency of the discipline” is also the process of integrating the key competency and subject areas in the consistent curriculum of primary and secondary schools. Based on this, the key competency integration K-12 curriculum is proposed. The vertical coherence and horizontal integration structure provided a future vision for the integration of key competency into subject teaching.

Professor Chen Jiaqi, a professor at the School of Education of the University of Hong Kong, who was also the former deputy secretary-general of the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, gave a full and in-depth discussion on the theme of "Hong Kong 'learning to learn' and 'new academic system’ curriculum reform: experience and challenges". She pointed out that "learning to learn" is the core of Hong Kong's "new academic system" curriculum reform and an integral part of the education system reform. In the report, she introduced the reform process of the “learning to learn” curriculum structure in Hong Kong from a macro level, specifically analyzed the professional guiding principles and characteristics of the “learning to learn” curriculum reform, and summarized the effective experience and challenges of the current curriculum reform.

Ikeo Fano, the president of the Japanese Association of Discipline Education, reported on the theme of "The Discipline Education in Japan: Curriculum and Teaching, Challenges and Prospects." Based on the current situation of education in Japan and the history and challenges of Japanese subject education research, he comprehensively discussed the connotation, framework and characteristics of subject education, and pointed out that subject education has the unique research object of "discipline education practice", so it should be round-trip between theory and practice, research and development, the aim is to improve and reform discipline education practice.

Jack P. Chan, Assistant Principal of New Utrecht Middle School, New York, made a report entitled "Future Curriculum: H (Health Care). E3 (Energy, Education, Environment). A (Agriculture). T (Technology) - Report from the New York Experience Initiative”. Through the analysis of global social environmental issues, he proposed that the future curriculum should be oriented to a wider field, helping the next generation to better cope with the future society, paying attention to issues closer to human beings, and that the H.E3.AT curriculum should become the “mother curriculum”, which seen as one of the strategies to solve the future development dilemma.

Professor Liu Lianghua from the ICI, ECNU, reported on the theme of "China’s Experience of Teaching Reform". He introduced the “great tradition” based on Cheng Zhu Lixue and the “small tradition” based on Lu Wang Xinxue. The “great tradition” means the pursuit of artificial education, the “small tradition” means it can reconcile the natural law of excessive humanization. He analyzed the conflicts and interactions between the two and summarized the Chinese experience in teaching reform from six levels. He pointed out that the natural law (holism) pursued by Chinese philosophy is the basic knowledge view of Chinese teaching reform. He also shared his views and positions on natural law.

★ Theme 3: Theory and Practice of Curriculum Research ★

Dr. Zhang Huajun from the Teacher Education Research Center of Beijing Normal University, made a report entitled “Cultivating a Unique and Inclusive Personality in the Curriculum: A Contemporary Dialogue with Dewey and Liang Shuming”, she adopted a method of comparative educational philosophy based on changes in contemporary society. The review examines the relevant ideas of Dewey and Liang Shuming. By exploring the question of "where does the belief in self-transformation come from?", she outlines the meaning of "unique and inclusive personality". Finally, she constructively explained the enlightenment of the curriculum education from the narrative space, aesthetic dimension and moral dimension of the curriculum development.

Professor Zhou Yong from the ICI, ECNU, made a report entitled “Cai Yuanpei and the Aesthetic Education Tradition of Chinese Curriculum Reform”. On the basis of reviewing the connotation and historical influence of Cai Yuanpei's aesthetic education thought, he explored the contemporary significance of Cai Yuanpei's aesthetic education thoughts. In order to meet the development needs of the country to build a better life, and to lay the foundation for the aesthetics of Chinese native courses. He believed that contemporary Chinese curriculum research and curriculum reform should be integrated into Cai Yuanpei's aesthetic education tradition.

Dr. Zhao Weili from the Chinese University of Hong Kong made a report entitled “Exploration of the Paradigm of Chinese Curriculum Culture Rationality with Western Theories”, which was based on China’s “School Style, Teaching Style, Academic Style” and “Foucault’s Big Smile”. Through the analysis of Heidegger and Foucault's language ontology and historical archaeological perspective, she explored the origin of Confucius's "wind-education" thought. In the end, she used her own interdisciplinary research as an example to explore how to use the western theory to explore the cultural rationality of Chinese curriculum education in the 21st century. She pointed out that on the one hand, we must ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of cultural colonization in the twentieth century, and on the other hand, we must strive to have an equal dialogue with Western curriculum education theories.

Jinwoong Song, Chairman of the Korea Science Education Association and Professor of Physics Education at Seoul National University, reported on the theme of “Imitation Games: Reflections on the Development of School Science Curriculum”. He briefly reviewed the development process of global science education in the past two centuries and introduced the development and achievements of science education in Korea in recent years. He pointed out that the overall development of the school science curriculum is an imitation of contemporary scientific ideas. This "imitation game" provides an operational method for the development of school science education to a certain extent. At the same time, he also expressed his expectation for the school science develop from "Imitation" to "creation".

John Banks, the founding principal of the New York State High School, Made a report themed "From Klein to Carranza: Analysis of the Development of Diffusion Courses in New York City Schools", he analyzed from 2002 to 2018, under the management of the mayors of Bloomberg and De Blasio, the systematic organization and philosophical transformation of public schools in New York City, as well as the corresponding changes and impacts of curriculum development. In the report, he also analyzed the significance of the study and put forward the question “What will happen next?”, which triggered the participants' thinking.

Professor Wu Gangping from the Institute of Curriculum and Instruction, East China Normal University, focused on Confucius's curriculum thought and gave a report. He first reviewed the curriculum practice of the Confucius era, summarized the content structure and basic characteristics of the poetry curriculum, discussed the poetry curriculum. And finally based on the social conditions, he started the contemporary imagination of the Confucius poetry curriculum thoughts, which provided the audience a new way of thinking.

Prof. Gao Desheng from the Institute of Curriculum and Instruction of East China Normal University, made a report mainly about the text book of morality and rule of law in China. He pointed out that before the curriculum reform, the former text book of morality and rule of law lack "childization", and it also violated both moral requirements and the original meaning of moral education. Through the analysis of the unified textbook, he affirmed its contents about children's experience, and believed that the textbook solved the problems of moral education textbooks and children's experience. The textbook has opened up a "Chinese road".

★ On-site Interaction and Innovation ★

In the on-site Q&A session, the forum innovatively adopts an online interactive method. After the audience scans the QR code through the mobile phone and enters the activity page, the questions are publicly displayed on the screen and monitored in real time. The audience interacts through comments and comments. According to the on-site monitoring data, the moderator selects the most praised questions and asks the on-site experts to answer, greatly improving the interaction efficiency and quality.

★ Sub-venue and Round Table Forum ★

On the afternoon of the 3rd, the three sub-meetings continued after the theme report of the conference. Dr. Huang Xiaorui, Dr. Zhou Wenye and Dr. Yang Xiaozhe from the Institute of Curriculum and Instruction were the hosts of each branch. The session report covers “Progress and Trends of International Curriculum Research”, “Cultural Trends of Thought and Curriculum Changes”, and “Regional Sharing Curriculum Construction under the Concept of Multi-integration and Integration”. 18 scholars discussed the problems encountered during the research, and shared their own results and thinking. Participants spoke enthusiastically and actively explored various issues arising from curriculum research.

At the same time, the invited experts from home and abroad attended the roundtable forum, and held a high-level academic dialogue with scholars from the ICI to discuss "How to Share Chinese Curriculum Experience to the International Stage". The forum was hosted by Professor Zhang Wei from ICI. At the forum, Professor Cui Yunhuo pointed out that curriculum reform is the central issue of the whole world. China has made great achievements in curriculum reform in the past 20 years. At present, it has entered the critical period of curriculum reform and is faced with the problem of how to share Chinese experience with the world. Communication helps us solve problems better and meet the challenges of the future better. Then, Jack.P.Chan, Prof. Olusola Adesope, and Prof. Jinwoong Song shared their unique experiences in curriculum reform in the context of global curriculum reform, and explored effective ways of sharing experiences and the direction of future curriculum reform.
