The First Session of ICI in 2019: Doctoral Application Experience Sharing Session

At 6 p.m. of January 6, the experience sharing session for doctoral applications of European and American universities was successfully held in the multi-function hall on the 3rd floor of Yifu Building. The session was hosted by Dr. Xiao Sihan, Deputy Director of the Institute of Curriculum and Instruction (ICI).

Dr. You Yun (graduated from the College of Education of University of London), Dr. Zhang Dan (graduated from The ENS Group), Dr. Wang Tao (graduated from the University of Washington) and Ph.D. candidate Zheng Lei (now learning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) were invited to share the experience of studying abroad for students majoring in education, more than 100 graduate students from various departments of the Faculty of Education attended the session.

The Experience Sharing Part

▲ Dr. You Yun

Dr. You Yun shared her experience of school, major and mentor selection, scholarship information collection, communication with the tutor during the formal application phase, and preparation of application materials.

▲Dr. Zhang Dan

Dr. Zhang Dan shared her experience in studying at the ENS Group. She mentioned that students are supposed to know the professors’ research orientation, research problems and research methods. When choosing a major, students should consider their own research interests and set a clear goal. Students need to manage themselves well in that The ENS Group enjoys a free learning atmosphere.

Dr. Zheng Lei's shared her experience based on her nine-year experience as being a graduate student. She pointed out that American colleges and universities pay great attention to the teaching experience of applicants, and applicants can make diverse choices based on their own academic background.

▲Dr. Wang Tao

Dr. Wang Tao recommend students to pay attention to the admission model of specific schools when applying. He pointed out that applicants who want to go abroad should be determined to get Doctoral degree, they need to find the areas that they are most interested in. Dr. Wang also share the experience of writing research statements and resume.

On-site Interaction

In the on-site interaction session, the students fully communicated with the presenters around the application time, application materials preparation, their confusion in language learning, the way to communicate with foreign tutors, and whether the applicant's domestic academic achievements could be recognized.
