2017-11-20

Recently, Professor Zhou Yong's essay “The Educational Efforts and Social Mobility of Students from Humble Origins” was reprinted by Xinhua Digest (No.19, 2017, pp. 124-126). This article was originally published in “Journal of Nanjing University (Social Science Edition)” 2017, the fourth period.

Prof. Zhou Yong did education equity research from the perspective of historical sociology, he said that it was quite difficult for students from humble origin in the Wei and Jin Dynasties to realize social rise through education. It was not until Northern Song Dynasty that this old phenomenon had ended. The new phenomenon stems from the fact that political and educational reforms have broken the social structure of medieval elites and provided an unprecedented and fair system for poor students to struggle for their future. At the end of the paper, Prof. Zhou Yong pointed that the research about poor students’ educational efforts and social mobility will not only help us to update and deepening the educational fairness research of curriculum and education theory.

Another essay written by Prof. Zhou Yong, which named The Century Problem and Historical Lessons of Chinese Educational Reform (published in Educational Development Research, No.2, 2017), was also reprinted by Xinhua Digest.
