Making Joint Efforts to Improve Research Quality: ICI Held a Seminar on Its Research Projects

In order to further improve the quality of the research projects and promote the output of outstanding achievements, ICI held a seminar on its scientific research projects on December 27, 2017. The seminar was hosted by An Guiqing, the vice director of ICI. Prof. Chen Shuangye, Prof. Ke Zheng, Associate Professor Wang Xiaoming, Dr. Xiao Sihan, Dr. Huang Xiaorui and other researchers gathered together, and discussed about the key projects and the projects of provincial and ministerial level in the 13th Five-year period.

The First Half: Discussion About Base Cultivated Projects

Researchers of ICI first focused on four base cultivated projects during the 13th Five-year period. The four project leaders mainly reported on the research progress, problems that encountered and future research plans after the project was set up, participating colleagues put forward a series of constructive research advices from their perspective.

Dr. Xiao Sihan presided over the project of “Classroom Interaction Study in Order to Facilitate Students’ Deep Learning”, he mainly reported on two sub-projects of the project. Based on the review of core documents and core interviews, a solid research foundation was obtained. The research outcomes have been compiled and then he published a treatise: Revoicing the Minds: A Sketch of Research in Interactions in the Classroom. Dr. Xiao Sihan indicated that he will focus on the second sub-project and start in-depth cooperation with classroom research center in University of Melbourne.

Associated Professor Wang Xiaoming presided over the project of “Research on Online Learning and Online Curriculum Design”. He concerned about the latest research progress in this area, and combined with his professional background, which is educational psychology and learning psychology, Associated Professor Wang Xiaoming will consider students’ learning law and mainly focus on the online curriculum design, the curriculum will be designed in manner of combining the internet and AI artificial intelligence technology together. The next steps are to complete the literature as soon as possible, finish the status survey, and choose one or a specific type of online courses for further study.

Prof. Chen Shuangye presided over the project of “A Comparison of Curriculum Reform Strategies of International Metropolitan and Technological Innovation Centers”. Prof. Chen reported mainly on the exploratory goals of the project, the progress that has been made in the research, the difficulties in the research and the research plan for the next phase. Prof. Chen made great effort on literature review, initially formed clear research ideas, and has already analyzed the situation of some representative metropolises.

Prof. Ke Zheng presided over the project of “Research on Integrated Design of College Entrance Examination and Curriculum Reform”. On behalf of Prof. Ke Zheng, Dr. Lei Hao, a full-time associate researcher of ICI, reported on the recent achievements and the next working arrangements of the project. The college entrance examination reform influenced a lot on curriculum reform, and the current college entrance examination reform and curriculum reform research scattered in different research groups, the project plans to effectively integrate these two types of research.

The Second Half: Discussion on National, Provincial and Ministerial Projects

Professor Chen Shuangye presided over the National Social Science Fund, 13th Five-Year Plan general education project in 2017, which named “Research on New Education Public Sentiment and Policy Response Strategy”. The project enjoys great theoretical and practical significance. The research mainly divided into three sub-projects to carry out. At present, it has completed an advisory report on public sentiment crisis and the governance of people's livelihood issues, and it has been adopted by the Central Propaganda Department. Meanwhile, other achievements and follow-up data sorting work are still forge ahead steadily.

Dr. Xiao Sihan presided over the National Education Plan, Youth Fund project “Reshaping the Empirical Study of Science Classroom Teaching Mode – With the Carrier of Classroom Debate”. Based on the descriptive research questions, Dr. Xiao reported the data collection and analytical framework of the project, and discussed the problematization of subject knowledge and the design of teachers’ discourse scheduling. Later, he will use two sets of programs to carry out the research and work hard to produce more research achievements.

Dr. Huang Xiaorui chaired the project named “Research on Junior High School Students’ Anxiety Index of Study and the Early Warning Mechanism”. Based on the research questions, Dr. Huang introduced the research progress, she has completed the questionnaire survey and the interview, plus, the relevant data have also been included. At present, two articles based on the project are about to be finalized. Dr. Huang planned to finish the research both theoretically and empirically, and further complete the description of students' anxiety levels and set up an early warning mechanism for students, teachers and schools / regions.

Dr. Wang Tao plan to apply for the National Education Science Planning Project, which mainly focuses on the issue of international understanding and literacy. Dr. Wang Tao has completed the notification according to the requirements. At the meeting, he mainly asked for colleagues to exchange ideas about name of the project, project team members and many other issues, which will help him to lay the foundation for the upcoming project.

The participants fully exchanged their ideas on key projects, which including self-cultivated projects and national, provincial and ministerial projects. The seminar is one of the "research-based activities" that ICI has always advocated and adhered to. Focusing on teaching and research work, we gather wisdom, actively apply for scientific research projects, strive to produce outstanding achievements and work together for the future development of ICI.
