Feasible and Effective: ICI Successfully Implement Online Teaching for Postgraduates

Preparation for Online Teaching

Since the Graduate School issued the opinions on the Curriculum Instruction and other Training for Postgraduate Students During the Prevention and Control of COVID-19, ICI has responded positively to the call of the ECNU. On February 5, the scholars of ICI carried out in-depth discussion on how to implement the document to ensure the quality of online teaching during the outbreak.

In addition, the preparatory group specially invited Dr. Yang Xiaozhe of ICI to serve as professional and technical support to share the ideas and experiences of mixed teaching.

In order to ensure that every teacher can fully understand the operation of the available online education platform and choose the appropriate tools for online teaching, ICI organized a “Online Teaching Preparation Cloud Seminar” from 8:00 to 9:30 on the evening of Feb. 7. Through the live broadcast mode of the “Tencent Conference” platform, Dr. Yang Xiaozhe first shared the methods and tools of mixed teaching and discussed with the teachers attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Dr. Xiao Sihan, Deputy Director of ICI.

The Organization of Online Teaching

On March 9, the online teaching for postgraduates of ICI was officially launched. A total of 4 curriculum of ICI will start online teaching in this semester.

Self-examination for Online Teaching

As of March 20, online teaching has lasted for two weeks, the four courses were taught online according to the original plan and are in good condition. Details are as follows:

1. According to the student number and the teaching plan, teachers choose appropriate platforms to implement online teaching. As of March 19, a total of 166 graduate students participated in online learning.

2. Complete the online test in advance to ensure that every student fully understands the relevant operations of the teaching platform.

3. Communicate fully with students before and after class each time and answer questions timely.

4. Teachers share the teaching materials in time through the selected platform.


Experience of Online Teaching

1. Fully prepare for online teaching.

2. Choose the appropriate teaching methods.

3. Encourage the interaction between teachers and students.

4. Encourage students to participate in the class.

5. Ensure the quality of online teaching.


Problems and Improvement Measures of Online Teaching

The problem:

The disconnection sometimes occurs, it has been solved by adjusting the network environment, quitting the meeting, rejoining, and so on.

Improvement measures:

Professor Chen Shuangye adjusted the recess time of each class. Students generally report that 3-hour study is too stressed. Through a questionnaire survey, the teacher decided to increase the recess time appropriately after coordinating with the students.

Dr. Xiao Sihan divided the three-hour class per week in the online teaching phase into two sessions (one on March 9 and one on March 12), in order to ensure the efficiency of 30 students, each session covers 1.5 hours.
